Introductory summary
Varicose veins show as bulging blue leg veins with evening heaviness, ankle swelling, night cramps and itching; skin darkening near the ankle is a warning of advancing disease, and sudden one-sided swelling suggests DVT.
Symptoms of varicose veins
What you see:
- Bulging, twisted blue-purple veins - rope-like, most visible on standing, along the calf and inner thigh
- Spider veins - the fine red-purple web of tiny vessels, often accompanying or preceding larger veins; mostly cosmetic
What you feel (the classic pattern):
- Heaviness and aching in the legs, characteristically worse by evening and after long standing - the day's pooled blood talking
- Ankle swelling by evening that leaves a sock-mark and is gone by morning
- Night cramps - sudden calf cramps waking you
- Itching and burning over the veins
- Restless, uncomfortable legs in the evening for some
- Relief when legs are elevated - a telling sign: gravity-dependent symptoms point to veins
Symptoms of advancing disease (these change the management):
- Skin darkening (brown-black discolouration) around the inner ankle - long-standing pressure deposits iron pigment in skin
- Eczema-like itchy, scaly skin near the ankle (venous eczema)
- Skin hardening (lipodermatosclerosis) - the ankle skin becomes tight, woody and tender
- A venous ulcer - a non-healing wound near the inner ankle; the end-stage of untreated disease
- Bleeding from a thin-walled surface vein, sometimes after minor scratching - can be brisk; lie down, elevate the leg, press firmly, and seek care if it does not stop
The symptom that is NOT varicose veins - the DVT warning: sudden one-sided leg swelling with pain, warmth and tightness, especially after travel, surgery or illness, is a deep-vein clot - a same-day doctor emergency, not a veins-clinic appointment. And chest pain with breathlessness after such swelling is a pulmonary embolism - call 112.
Remember: evening heaviness + bulging veins + ankle swelling that elevation relieves = classic varicose veins; ankle skin darkening = see a specialist; sudden one-sided painful swelling = DVT rule-out today.
Ayurvedic view (interpretive)
Classical observation of vein prominence and leg heaviness matches the surface picture. The DVT distinction - invisible, deep, dangerous - is modern medicine's essential contribution to symptom-reading.
