Yoga and exercise for vitiligo

Introductory summary
Yoga and exercise serve stress, mood and fitness in vitiligo - protect patches from sun and friction, and let medicine do the treating.
Yoga and exercise cannot repigment vitiligo - but they address two things that genuinely influence this condition: stress and overall health. Their role is supportive, and it is real.
Stress is the practical link. Emotional stress is a commonly reported trigger for vitiligo flares, and the condition itself is a major stress source - a cycle worth breaking. Regular yoga practice, and especially calming pranayama (anulom-vilom, bhramari) and relaxation (shavasana, yoga nidra), are reasonable, low-risk tools for stress regulation. Evidence that this changes the disease course is limited, but stress reduction helps quality of life regardless.
Exercise for general health. Regular moderate exercise supports immune balance, mood and sleep. Outdoor exercise doubles as sensible sunlight exposure for overall health - but protect vitiligo patches with sunscreen, because they burn.
Practical precautions:
- Avoid friction-heavy or injury-prone activities on affected skin where new patches could appear at trauma sites (protect hands and feet, use mats, avoid tight rubbing gear).
- Swimming is fine - apply waterproof sunscreen to patches; rinse off chlorine after.
- Sweat and sun: patches sunburn fast, so schedule outdoor sessions for early morning or evening and reapply sunscreen.
The honest boundary: no asana, kriya or breathing technique restores pigment, and claims otherwise should be treated with scepticism. Use yoga for stress, sleep and fitness - and let medical treatment do the treating.
Ayurvedic view (interpretive): traditional practice pairs stress-calming routines with skin-disease care within an interpretive framework of limited evidence - a sensible adjunct, never a substitute.
Remember: yoga and exercise here are for stress, mood and fitness - worthwhile goals that support everything else. Protect patches from sun and friction while you do them, and let phototherapy and medicine handle the pigment.
