Types of Body Ache

Introductory summary
The types of body ache: generalized vs localized, acute vs chronic, muscular vs joint vs bone vs nerve pain - and why the type directs the treatment.
"Body ache" covers several different kinds of pain. Identifying which kind you have is half the treatment.
By distribution
- Generalized (all-over) aching: the viral-fever type, fibromyalgia, deficiencies, overexertion
- Localized aching: one muscle group or region - usually strain, posture, or a local problem; persistent single-site pain deserves more attention than diffuse ache
By duration
- Acute (days): infections, exertion, poor sleep - self-limiting
- Chronic (weeks to months): deficiencies, thyroid, fibromyalgia, inflammatory disease, medication effects - worth a work-up
By mechanism
- Muscular (myalgia): the common kind - sore, tender muscles after exertion or during infections
- Joint-centred (arthralgia): aching centred on joints - chikungunya classically leaves this for weeks; arthritis is the chronic version
- Bone pain: deep, constant, often night-time - not typical of benign causes; persistent bone pain needs evaluation
- Nerve-type pain: burning, tingling, shooting - a different list of causes entirely
By setting
- Exertional: delayed-onset muscle soreness after unaccustomed activity; peaks at 24-72 hours
- Infection-associated: with fever and other illness signs; dengue and chikungunya are the seasonal Indian examples
- Tension/postural: neck, shoulder and back ache from stress, screens and sitting
- Systemic: the diffuse, persistent aching of deficiencies, thyroid disease, fibromyalgia or inflammation
The classical parallel
Classical texts separated Angamarda (the crushing, fever-associated ache), Angabhanga (severe "breaking" pain of strong Vata aggravation) and Sarvanga Shula (generalized Vata-or-Ama pain) - distinctions by quality and cause rather than by body part. Modern medicine sorts by mechanism instead of dosha; both systems agree on the practical point: the character and company of the pain identify its type, and the type directs treatment.
