Types of Dandruff

Introductory summary

Dandruff arrives dry or oily, mild or as spreading seborrheic dermatitis - and the psoriasis, ringworm, dry-scalp and product-buildup imitators each need a different plan. Matching the type to the treatment is half the cure.

Dandruff looks like one thing but arrives in a few recognisable forms - and knowing which one lives on your head decides which shampoo and routine will actually work.

1. Dry-type flaking

  • Small, white, dry flakes that fall freely onto shoulders
  • Scalp feels tight rather than greasy
  • Commonest in winter; responds to gentle moisturising care plus a mild anti-dandruff shampoo

2. Oily-type dandruff

  • Larger, yellowish, slightly sticky flakes that cling to the scalp and hair
  • Scalp is visibly oily; itching is usually stronger
  • The classic Malassezia-driven picture - responds best to antifungal shampoos

3. Seborrheic dermatitis (the louder form)

  • Dandruff plus obvious redness and greasy scaling, often spreading to eyebrows, nose creases, behind the ears, or the chest
  • Flares with stress and season; can need a short course of prescription anti-inflammatory lotion on top of shampoo

4. The imitators (different conditions, different treatment)

  • Scalp psoriasis: thick silvery plaques with sharp borders, often a family history
  • Dry scalp: tiny white dust, tight skin, improves with moisturising and gentler washing - not a yeast problem
  • Tinea capitis (scalp ringworm): contagious fungal infection with broken hairs - needs oral antifungals
  • Product buildup: waxy residue from heavy stylers - clarifying wash solves it

Why the type matters

Antifungal shampoos fix the yeast-driven types; they do nothing for dry scalp (which needs moisturising) or psoriasis (which needs a dermatologist). Two weeks of the right shampoo for the right type beats two months of guessing.

One-line summary

Dandruff comes dry or oily, mild or as spreading seborrheic dermatitis - and the psoriasis, ringworm, dry-scalp and product-buildup look-alikes each need their own plan, so matching the type to the treatment is half the cure.
