Diet and Food Guidance for Hair Loss

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Protein, iron, zinc, B12 and vitamin D foods, what to avoid and supplement cautions.

Hair is made mostly of protein and depends on a steady supply of iron, zinc and several vitamins. A balanced diet supports hair health. Food alone does not reverse genetic pattern loss.

Foods that support a balanced diet

  • Protein: dal, legumes, eggs, paneer, curd, fish or chicken if eaten.
  • Iron: green leafy vegetables, lentils, chickpeas, jaggery in small amounts, dates and meat. Eat these with vitamin C foods such as amla, lemon or guava to help absorption.
  • Zinc: pumpkin seeds, nuts, whole grains and legumes.
  • Vitamin B12: milk, curd, eggs and fish. Strict vegetarians and vegans often need a supplement advised by a doctor.
  • Vitamin D: sunlight in moderation and foods or supplements advised after a blood test.
  • Healthy fats: nuts, seeds and a little ghee or oil.

What to avoid

  • Crash diets, long fasting and very low calorie plans, which commonly trigger shedding.
  • Excess sugary and ultra-processed food.

Ayurvedic dietary advice

Ayurveda suggests fresh, warm, home-cooked meals and limiting excessive sour, salty and fried food. This is a traditional guideline, not proven treatment for hair loss.

Supplements

Do not take high doses of biotin, vitamin A or selenium without advice. Excess vitamin A and selenium can themselves cause hair loss, and biotin can distort some blood test results.

Key point

Correct a deficiency only when tests show one, and ask your doctor before starting supplements.

Before your appointment

Note when shedding began, how much you lose, and any recent illness, fever, surgery, crash diet, new medicine or stress. Bring recent blood reports such as ferritin, thyroid, B12 and vitamin D, a list of the products you use, and monthly photos of your parting. Mention any family history of hair loss or autoimmune disease.
