Symptoms of Hair Loss

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Thinning, widening parting, bald patches and shedding, and warning signs for a doctor.

Symptoms depend on the type of hair loss. Noticing the pattern early makes treatment easier.

Common signs

  • Gradual thinning at the top of the head or a widening parting
  • Receding hairline at the temples
  • Round or oval bald patches with smooth skin
  • Sudden, diffuse shedding, with large amounts of hair on the pillow, comb or in the shower drain
  • Broken hair and short broken strands, often with hair care damage or fungal infection
  • Patchy scaling on the scalp, sometimes with redness or itching

Pull test and clues

Gently pulling a small bunch of hair that comes out easily (more than a few strands) suggests active shedding. A ponytail that feels thinner over months is another clue.

Signs that need a doctor soon

  • Burning, pain, pus or heavy scaling on the scalp
  • Redness with shiny, smooth skin where follicle openings have disappeared (possible scarring alopecia)
  • Hair loss with fatigue, weight change, heavy periods, feeling cold or fast heartbeat
  • Loss of eyebrows, eyelashes or body hair
  • Hair loss in a child
  • Sudden heavy shedding after starting a new medicine

Emotional effects

Hair loss can cause worry, low mood and loss of confidence. Talking to a doctor or counsellor is reasonable and common.

Key point

Early review of scarring or patchy loss can save follicles that cannot regrow later.

Before your appointment

Note when shedding began, how much you lose, and any recent illness, fever, surgery, crash diet, new medicine or stress. Bring recent blood reports such as ferritin, thyroid, B12 and vitamin D, a list of the products you use, and monthly photos of your parting. Mention any family history of hair loss or autoimmune disease.
