Ayurvedic Treatment for Hair Loss

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Khalitya and indralupta, scalp care, herbs and safety, with limited evidence noted.

Ayurveda describes hair loss as khalitya and indralupta and links it to aggravated pitta, weak digestion and tissue nourishment, stress and poor sleep. Ayurvedic care is offered as a complementary approach. Scientific evidence for most Ayurvedic hair treatments is limited, and it should not delay assessment of an underlying disease.

What practitioners commonly describe

  • Lifestyle review: regular sleep, meals at fixed times, managing stress and avoiding very hot, spicy or fried food in excess.
  • Scalp care (shiro abhyanga): gentle scalp oil massage with a plain oil such as coconut or sesame, followed by a mild wash. Massage may feel soothing and improve scalp comfort. It has not been shown to regrow hair.
  • Herbs traditionally used: bhringraj, amla, brahmi and neem appear in classical texts. Small studies exist for some, but quality is low and results are uncertain.
  • Internal medicines: given by a qualified Ayurvedic doctor after an assessment.

Safety points

  • Choose a registered practitioner (BAMS) and buy products from a reputable maker. Some Ayurvedic preparations have been found to contain heavy metals.
  • Do not apply oils to an inflamed, infected or scarring scalp.
  • Stop any product that causes itching, rash or burning.
  • Tell both your Ayurvedic and your regular doctor about everything you take.

Key point

Use Ayurveda as an adjunct to, not a substitute for, a medical diagnosis, especially for patchy, sudden or scarring hair loss.

Before your appointment

Note when shedding began, how much you lose, and any recent illness, fever, surgery, crash diet, new medicine or stress. Bring recent blood reports such as ferritin, thyroid, B12 and vitamin D, a list of the products you use, and monthly photos of your parting. Mention any family history of hair loss or autoimmune disease.
