Yoga and Exercise for Herpes
Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only
Introductory summary
Yoga and exercise with herpes: stress-easing breathing and gentle movement, and what to skip during an outbreak.
Yoga and gentle exercise do not treat the virus. They may help with stress, sleep and general wellbeing, which are linked to flare-ups for some people.
What may help
- Slow breathing (pranayama): simple belly breathing and alternate nostril breathing for calm. Avoid forceful breathing during an active attack.
- Gentle stretching and walking to keep the body active.
- Meditation or relaxation for 10 to 15 minutes a day.
- Restorative poses such as supported child's pose, if comfortable.
During an active outbreak
- Rest and avoid pressure or friction on the sores.
- Skip poses that rub a genital or skin rash, or that cause heavy sweating on blisters.
- With shingles, choose very gentle movement and stop if it hurts.
- Avoid shared mats and wash gym equipment and mats after use to prevent spread.
- Skip contact sports and swimming pools until sores have healed.
For nerve pain after shingles
Gentle movement, walking and relaxation may help, but get medical advice for persistent pain.
Be careful
- Do not push through pain or fever.
- Avoid hot yoga while you have an outbreak.
Key point
Use yoga for stress and recovery, and rely on antiviral treatment for the infection itself.
Before your appointment
Note when the first symptoms began, where the sores or rash are, and any fever or pain. List past episodes, triggers, partners who should know, and any pregnancy. Bring your medicines and past reports, including HIV or STI tests. Ask about antiviral options, how to protect others and the warning signs that mean you should call 112 or 102.
