Symptoms of Herpes

Many people with herpes have no symptoms or very mild ones. When symptoms appear, they depend on the type of infection.

Oral herpes (cold sores)

• Tingling, itching or burning on the lip or around the mouth 1 to 2 days before the sore appears
• Small fluid-filled blisters that burst, crust and heal in about 1 to 2 weeks
• Fever, swollen glands and sore mouth during the first episode

Genital herpes

• Painful blisters or sores on the genitals, buttocks or thighs
• Burning while passing urine
• Itching, discharge, fever, body ache and swollen groin glands in the first episode
• Repeat episodes are usually shorter and milder

Shingles (herpes zoster)

• Burning, tingling or sharp pain on one side of the body, often before a rash
• A band of blisters on one side of the chest, back, face or abdomen
• Fever, tiredness and headache

Signs that need prompt medical care

• A shingles rash on the face, near the eye or on the forehead, or any eye pain or vision change
• A herpes sore on a newborn or a baby with fever and poor feeding
• Severe pain, a spreading rash, confusion, or a rash with a weak immune system
• Herpes in pregnancy

Key point

Starting antivirals within about 72 hours of the first symptoms works best, so do not wait for blisters to heal on their own if you suspect herpes.

Before your appointment

Note when the first symptoms began, where the sores or rash are, and any fever or pain. List past episodes, triggers, partners who should know, and any pregnancy. Bring your medicines and past reports, including HIV or STI tests. Ask about antiviral options, how to protect others and the warning signs that mean you should call 112 or 102.
