Stages of Indigestion

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

How indigestion progresses from occasional discomfort to persistent symptoms, and when alarm signs need tests.

Indigestion does not have formal medical stages. This guide describes how it commonly progresses and when it needs attention.

1. Occasional discomfort

Mild fullness, bloating or burning after a heavy or late meal. It settles in a few hours and usually responds to lighter food and rest.

2. Recurrent symptoms

Episodes come back several times a week. Triggers such as spicy food, stress, smoking or painkillers become clear. Lifestyle change and short-term antacids are often enough.

3. Persistent symptoms (over 2 to 4 weeks)

Symptoms continue despite simple measures. A doctor may test for H. pylori and consider acid-lowering treatment.

4. Symptoms with alarm features

Black stools, vomiting, weight loss, trouble swallowing or anaemia. These need prompt investigation, usually endoscopy.

5. Complications of an underlying cause

If a cause such as an ulcer or reflux is not treated, bleeding, scarring or narrowing can occur.

Recovery

Many people improve with lifestyle change, treatment of any infection or ulcer and avoiding triggers. Functional dyspepsia may come and go for years.

Ayurvedic view

Traditional texts describe progressive indigestion starting from ama (undigested residue). This is an interpretive framework.

Key point

Early care and trigger control keep most indigestion from becoming chronic.

Before your appointment

Note when symptoms started, how they relate to meals, and what makes them better or worse. List all medicines, especially painkillers, and any herbal products. Mention weight loss, vomiting, black stools, trouble swallowing, family history of stomach problems, smoking and alcohol. Ask about tests such as an H. pylori test or endoscopy, and the warning signs that mean you should call 112 or 102.
