Introductory summary
Types of motion sickness: car, sea, air, train, virtual reality and mal de debarquement, and look-alike conditions.
Motion sickness is grouped by what triggers it. The symptoms are similar, but prevention steps differ.
Car sickness
The most common form. Triggered by winding roads, stop-start driving, sitting in the back and reading or using a phone.
Seasickness
Occurs on boats and ships from rolling, pitching and the swell of the water. It can be severe on small boats.
Air sickness
Brought on by turbulence and sharp changes in height. It is more common in small planes.
Train and bus sickness
Often linked to sitting facing backwards, swaying and poor air.
Space motion sickness
Seen in astronauts in the first days in weightlessness. Rarely relevant for most people.
Simulator and virtual reality sickness
Also called cybersickness. The eyes see motion but the body is still. It can occur with video games, VR headsets and large cinema screens.
Ride and swing sickness
Triggered by amusement park rides and swings.
Mal de debarquement syndrome
A rare condition in which a rocking or swaying feeling continues after the journey ends. It can last for weeks or months and needs a doctor.
Other conditions that look similar
Inner-ear disease, migraine-related vertigo, low blood sugar and pregnancy sickness can cause similar symptoms and need their own care.
Ayurvedic view
Traditional texts group dizziness by Dosha. These groups do not match modern types.
Key point
All types share the same signal mismatch, so many of the same steps help.
Remember
Most motion sickness is mild and passes once the movement stops. Plan ahead, stay hydrated and see a doctor if symptoms are severe or last more than a day.
