Introductory summary

Motion sickness home care: seat choice, light meals, fresh air, looking at the horizon and tips for children.

Most motion sickness can be reduced with simple steps before and during travel.

Before the journey

  • Sleep well the night before
  • Eat a light meal 1 to 2 hours before. Do not travel on an empty stomach or after a heavy, oily or spicy meal.
  • Drink water
  • Choose your seat: front seat of a car, over the wing in a plane, middle of a ship at lower decks, facing forward in a train
  • Avoid alcohol

During the journey

  • Look at the horizon or a far-off point, and avoid reading or using a phone
  • Keep your head still, resting against the headrest
  • Open a window or direct fresh air to your face
  • Breathe slowly and steadily
  • Take small sips of water
  • Stop often on long road trips, and step out for fresh air
  • Avoid strong smells, smoking and stuffy air
  • Listen to music or talk to distract yourself
  • If possible, close your eyes and rest, or sleep

If nausea starts

Stop reading, look out, get air, and try slow breathing. If you can, stop the vehicle for a few minutes.

Wrist bands

Acupressure bands are sold for motion sickness. Evidence is mixed, but they are safe to try for some people.

Children

Seat children where they can see out, play word or listening games and avoid screens. Do not use steam or home drops. Keep a bag and wipes ready.

Do not

  • Use alcohol or heavy snacks to settle nausea
  • Give honey to infants under 12 months
  • Give adult medicines to children

See a doctor if

Vomiting does not stop, or there is severe dizziness, weakness or speech trouble (call 112 or 102).

Remember

Most motion sickness is mild and passes once the movement stops. Plan ahead, stay hydrated and see a doctor if symptoms are severe or last more than a day.
