Medicines and Products for Motion Sickness

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Motion sickness medicines: antihistamines, scopolamine, wristbands and ginger, with drowsiness and child cautions.

Medicines can prevent or ease motion sickness. They work best when taken before the journey. Check with a doctor or pharmacist, especially for children, pregnancy and older adults.

Antihistamines

  • Dimenhydrinate and cinnarizine: taken before travel. They cause drowsiness, so do not drive or use machines after taking them.
  • Promethazine: a stronger option for severe cases. It causes marked sleepiness and is not for young children without a doctor.
  • Meclizine: available in some countries

Take them 30 to 60 minutes before travel, as the label says.

Scopolamine (hyoscine)

Available as a patch worn behind the ear for sea trips, or tablets. It can cause dry mouth, blurred vision and confusion, especially in older adults and children. It is not suitable for everyone, and needs medical advice.

Anti-nausea medicines

Ondansetron or domperidone are sometimes used for nausea or vomiting under medical advice. They are not standard for prevention.

Non-drug products

  • Acupressure wristbands: mixed evidence
  • Ginger products: modest, uncertain benefit

Cautions

  • Drowsiness can be strong. Avoid alcohol with these medicines.
  • Not for glaucoma, enlarged prostate or breathing problems without a doctor's advice
  • Children: many are unsuitable for young children. Ask a paediatrician for the right medicine and dose.
  • Pregnancy: ask a doctor before any medicine
  • Older adults are more sensitive to side effects

When medicines are not enough

See a doctor if symptoms are severe, keep returning or follow no motion at all.

Key point

Take the right medicine before travel, mind the drowsiness and check with a doctor for children and pregnancy.
