Introductory summary

Step-by-step treatment of neck pain, from self-care to physiotherapy and specialist care.

Most neck pain improves with self-care. Treatment depends on the cause and how long you have had pain.

Step 1: rule out red flags

Neck pain after injury, arm or leg weakness, trouble walking, loss of bladder or bowel control, fever with stiff neck, chest pain or severe sudden headache needs emergency care (112 or 102).

Step 2: simple self-care for 1 to 2 weeks

  • Heat or cold packs
  • Gentle neck movement and walking
  • Pain relief as advised
  • Better posture and sleep position

Step 3: see a doctor if it persists

If pain lasts more than 1 to 2 weeks, is severe or has arm symptoms, see a doctor. A physical examination often suffices. X-ray, MRI or nerve tests are used when there are red flags or nerve signs.

Step 4: physiotherapy

A physiotherapist teaches stretching, strengthening and posture exercises. This is one of the best long-term treatments.

Step 5: medicines

Painkillers, muscle relaxants for short periods, nerve pain medicines or injections in selected cases.

Step 6: specialist care

For a pinched nerve or spinal cord pressure that does not improve, or that causes weakness, a spine specialist may advise injections or surgery.

Where Ayurveda fits

Therapies such as gentle oil massage or fomentation may add comfort. They should not replace a medical check for red flags.

Remember

Stay active, fix posture and seek care early for warning signs. Most people recover fully.

When to get help

Seek a doctor's advice if symptoms last beyond two weeks, keep returning, or come with arm weakness, numbness, fever or trouble walking. Avoid self-medicating for long periods, and do not use oils, herbs or home remedies on infants or young children without a paediatrician's advice. In an emergency call 112 or 102.
