Medicines for neck pain ease pain so that you can stay active. They do not fix posture or weak muscles. Always follow a doctor or pharmacist's advice.
Pain relievers
- Paracetamol: for mild to moderate pain, in the dose on the label
- NSAIDs such as ibuprofen, naproxen and diclofenac: reduce pain and inflammation. They can irritate the stomach and affect kidneys and blood pressure. Take with food and for the shortest time. Avoid them in ulcers, kidney disease, late pregnancy and without advice in asthma or heart disease.
- Topical gels and sprays: diclofenac or menthol products applied to the skin. Do not apply on broken skin.

For nerve pain
If a nerve is pinched, doctors may give nerve pain medicines such as gabapentin or pregabalin, or a short course of steroids. These need a prescription.
Injections and procedures
Steroid injections near the nerves, or surgery for severe nerve or spinal cord compression, are used in selected cases after a specialist review.
Supplements
Vitamin D, calcium and B12 only if tests show a need.
