Introductory summary
Ayurvedic view of neck pain (Manyastambha), traditional therapies and safety notes.
Ayurveda describes neck stiffness and pain as Manyastambha or Greeva Graha, and age-related neck problems as Greeva Sandhigata Vata. They are linked to aggravated Vata, often with weak digestion. This is a traditional framework. Research on Ayurvedic treatment for neck pain is limited and mixed.
Traditional approaches
- Abhyanga (oil massage): gentle warm oil massage by a trained therapist
- Swedana (herbal steam or fomentation): warm application to the neck, done by trained therapists, not by home steam
- Greeva Basti: warm medicated oil held over the neck in a dam, done in a clinic
- Nasya: nasal oil treatment in a clinic only. Do not put oils in the nose at home.
- Herbs often mentioned: Ashwagandha, Guggulu, Dashamoola, Nirgundi and Rasna preparations
Some small studies suggest benefit from certain therapies for neck pain, but quality is limited.
Lifestyle
- Warm, light food and enough rest
- Avoid cold draughts on the neck
- Gentle movement and stretching
- Regular daily routine and good sleep
Safety
- See a doctor first for neck pain after injury or with arm weakness or numbness
- Do not allow forceful neck cracking or manipulation by untrained people, which can injure arteries or the spinal cord
- Some herbal products contain heavy metals or interact with medicines. Buy from reliable sources.
- Avoid herbs in pregnancy unless a doctor advises
- No oils, herbs or honey for infants
Remember
Ayurvedic therapies can be an adjunct for comfort. Combine them with medical advice and exercise.
