Complications and risks of palpitations

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Possible complications of untreated rhythm problems and emergency signs.

Most palpitations are harmless and cause no lasting harm. Complications arise when palpitations are caused by a heart rhythm problem or heart disease that is not treated.

Possible complications of the underlying rhythm problem

  • Stroke: atrial fibrillation can form clots in the heart. The risk can be lowered with blood thinners.
  • Heart failure: long periods of a very fast rhythm can weaken the heart
  • Fainting and injury: from a sudden drop in blood flow, such as a fall
  • Cardiac arrest and sudden death: rare, linked with dangerous rhythms such as ventricular tachycardia or in some inherited heart conditions
  • Chest pain and reduced exercise capacity

Effects on daily life

  • Anxiety and fear of the next episode
  • Poor sleep and tiredness
  • Avoiding exercise or travel
  • Missed work or school

Risks linked to medicines and procedures

  • Beta-blockers may cause tiredness and slow heart rate
  • Antiarrhythmic drugs can sometimes cause other rhythm problems
  • Blood thinners increase bleeding risk
  • Ablation and device procedures have small risks, which your cardiologist will explain

Ayurvedic view

Traditional texts mention weakness, fear and fainting with severe heart disturbance. This is an interpretive view and does not replace urgent medical care.

Emergency signs

Chest pain, fainting, severe breathlessness, weakness on one side, difficulty speaking or a heartbeat that stays very fast need emergency care. Call 112.

See a doctor if you have palpitations with a known heart condition, or a family history of sudden death.

Remember

Most palpitations are benign. Getting a proper check lets you rule out the few that are not.
