Introductory summary
Medicines for palpitations: treating the cause, beta-blockers, rhythm drugs and ablation.
Treatment depends on the cause. Many people with occasional harmless palpitations need no medicine. Always use medicines under a doctor's advice.
Treating the cause
- Anaemia: iron or other treatment
- Overactive thyroid: antithyroid medicines or other treatment
- Low potassium or magnesium: correction under medical care
- Anxiety: counselling, relaxation, and sometimes medicines
Medicines for heart rhythm
- Beta-blockers such as metoprolol or propranolol slow the heart rate and ease palpitations. They are not suitable for everyone, for example some people with asthma.
- Calcium channel blockers such as diltiazem or verapamil for some fast rhythms
- Antiarrhythmic drugs such as flecainide or amiodarone, started by a specialist
- Blood thinners for atrial fibrillation when stroke risk is high
Procedures
- Catheter ablation for SVT, atrial fibrillation and some other rhythms
- Cardioversion for some fast irregular rhythms
- Pacemaker or defibrillator in selected cases
Ayurvedic and herbal products
Arjuna, Ashwagandha, Brahmi and other products are sold for the heart and stress. Evidence is limited, and some interact with heart, thyroid and blood-thinning medicines. Avoid stimulant-containing "energy" or weight-loss products.
Safety points
- Do not stop beta-blockers suddenly
- Tell your doctor about all medicines, including cold remedies and inhalers
- Report dizziness, fainting or a very slow pulse
See a doctor if palpitations continue despite treatment, or you have side effects from medicines.
Remember
The right treatment depends on the right diagnosis. Get an ECG before starting anything.
