Introductory summary
Peptic ulcer care in pregnancy, children and older adults.
Peptic ulcers need extra care in pregnancy, in children and in older adults.
Pregnancy
- Ulcers are less common, but heartburn is frequent. Burning pain, vomiting blood or black stools need medical review.
- Many antacids and some acid reducers are used in pregnancy, but only on a doctor's advice.
- H. pylori treatment is usually delayed until after delivery unless symptoms are severe.
- Avoid herbal remedies and self-medication.
Children
- Ulcers are uncommon. Persistent stomach pain, vomiting, poor weight gain or blood in stool need a paediatric doctor.
- H. pylori testing and treatment are done carefully by a specialist.
- Do not give adult medicines, herbs or home remedies to young children.
- Seek help urgently for vomiting blood or black stools.
Older adults
- Ulcers are more likely to bleed and cause anaemia, often without much pain.
- Pain tablets, aspirin and blood thinners are the main risk. Review them with a doctor.
- Symptoms such as weight loss, tiredness and breathlessness may be the first sign.
- Endoscopy is usually advised for new symptoms.
People on long-term medicines
If you take NSAIDs, steroids, blood thinners or SSRIs, ask whether stomach protection is needed.
Ayurvedic view (interpretive)
Traditional practice advises particular caution with strong herbs and purification procedures in pregnancy, childhood and old age. Evidence is limited, so consult a qualified doctor.
Emergency signs: call 112 or 102
Vomiting blood, black stools, fainting or sudden severe abdominal pain.
Remember
Pregnancy, children and older age need medical guidance before any ulcer treatment.
