Ayurvedic treatment for peptic ulcer

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Ayurvedic view of ulcers, and why modern treatment comes first.

Ayurveda describes burning stomach pain and acidity under terms such as Amlapitta and Parinama shula, and relates them to aggravated Pitta and weak digestion (Agni). This is a traditional framework. It is used here for understanding and is not a proven treatment for ulcers.

Safety first

A peptic ulcer can bleed or perforate. Modern diagnosis and treatment, including testing for H. pylori and acid-reducing medicines, come first. Ayurvedic measures are, at most, a supportive addition under guidance from a qualified doctor.

Traditional approaches sometimes used

  • Pitta-calming food habits: regular, light, warm meals, avoiding very sour, salty, fried and fermented foods.
  • Herbs traditionally used for acidity and stomach soothing: such as licorice (Yashtimadhu), amla, and Shatavari. Evidence in people is limited and mixed.
  • Cooling, soothing preparations: such as coconut water or buttermilk without added spice in some traditions.
  • Panchakarma procedures: such as Virechana, only under supervision and not during active bleeding or severe disease.

Cautions

  • Do not stop prescribed antibiotics or acid medicines in favour of herbs.
  • Licorice can raise blood pressure and lower potassium. Deglycyrrhizinated licorice is used differently, so ask your doctor.
  • Some herbal and mineral preparations contain heavy metals or irritant ingredients. Use only products from reliable makers.
  • Avoid self-prescribing in pregnancy, children and people with liver or kidney disease.

When to get help

Black stools, vomiting blood or severe pain need emergency care (112 or 102), not home remedies.

Remember

Ayurveda is an interpretive, adjunct approach with limited evidence. It does not replace testing and medicines for a peptic ulcer.
