Medicines and products for premature greying

Introductory summary
Tests, deficiency treatment and cosmetic options for grey hair.
There is no approved medicine that restores colour to grey hair caused by genetics or age. Treatment focuses on finding and treating any medical cause.
Tests a doctor may order
- Vitamin B12, folate, ferritin and iron studies
- Vitamin D
- Thyroid function tests
- Blood count
- Other tests if an autoimmune condition is suspected
Treating a found cause
- Vitamin B12 deficiency: tablets or injections, as prescribed
- Iron deficiency or anaemia: iron supplements and treating the cause
- Thyroid disease: thyroid medicines
- Vitamin D deficiency: supplements Some people notice colour returning to some hairs after correction, but this is not certain and varies.
Cautions
- Do not take high-dose supplements without a blood test
- Be wary of products promising to "reverse grey hair". Oral supplements marketed for this, such as biotin or "hair-pigment" tablets, are not proven when levels are normal.
- Biotin supplements can interfere with some blood tests, so tell your doctor if you take them.
Cosmetic options
- Hair dyes and colourants (patch test first)
- Semi-permanent colour
- Henna (pure only)
- Colour-depositing shampoos and root concealers
Hair dye safety
Avoid products with PPD if you have had an allergic reaction. Do not leave dye on longer than directed. Seek urgent medical help for swelling of the face or breathing difficulty after dye use.
Ayurvedic view (interpretive)
Herbal oils and tonics may be used as supportive care only. Evidence for hair colour is limited.
Remember
Treat any deficiency or thyroid problem. For genetic greying, dyes are the practical option.
