Yoga and exercise for premature greying

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

How exercise and yoga support stress control and hair health.

Exercise and yoga cannot reverse genetic greying. They can reduce stress, improve sleep and support general health, which may help hair health in a small way.

Why movement may help

Chronic stress and poor sleep are linked with hair problems. Regular activity lowers stress hormones and improves circulation.

Suitable activities

  • Walking or light jogging: 30 minutes most days
  • Yoga: postures such as Tadasana, Vajrasana, Uttanasana (forward fold), Shashankasana and Sarvangasana are often practised for the head and neck. Do inversions only if you are comfortable, and avoid them with high blood pressure, neck problems, glaucoma or during menstruation if advised by your teacher.
  • Pranayama: Anulom vilom and Bhramari breathing, practised gently, help to calm the mind
  • Meditation and relaxation: 10 to 15 minutes daily
  • Strength training and swimming for fitness and mood

What the evidence says

Studies show yoga and exercise reduce stress and improve sleep. There is no good evidence that they restore hair colour.

Cautions

  • Learn inversions from a trained teacher and stop if you feel dizzy
  • Avoid extremes such as exhausting workouts, which can raise stress
  • Do not use exercise instead of checking for a medical cause

Scalp massage

Gentle fingertip massage may feel relaxing. It does not change hair colour.

Ayurvedic view (interpretive)

Yoga and pranayama are used traditionally to calm Pitta and reduce stress. This is a framework and not proof of effect on hair colour.

When to get help

See a doctor if greying is sudden or comes with other symptoms.

Remember

Exercise and yoga support stress control and general health, not guaranteed colour return.
