Premature greying in special cases (pregnancy, children, elderly)

Greying earlier than expected needs slightly different thinking in pregnancy, children and older adults.

Children and teenagers

• Greying before about age 10, or in many hairs at once, should be checked by a doctor
• Causes can include genetics, vitamin B12 or iron deficiency, thyroid disease, vitiligo and, rarely, genetic conditions
• Treat any deficiency as advised by the doctor
• Do not use hair dye on young children. Avoid PPD products and do not give herbal tonics or supplements without advice.
• Reassure the child, as appearance can affect confidence

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

• Pregnancy can use up iron, B12 and folate, so deficiency may show as greying or hair changes. Ask your doctor about testing.
• Take only the supplements your doctor prescribes
• Be careful with hair dye. Many doctors advise avoiding colouring in the first trimester, and using reliable products, with good ventilation and short contact time afterwards. Ask your doctor.
• Do not use unregulated herbal oils, powders or internal remedies

Older adults

• Greying with age is normal
• Sudden change, or greying with fatigue, memory change or tingling can point to B12 deficiency, which is common in older people
• Hair dye can irritate thinner, sensitive scalp skin, so patch test first

People with other conditions

If you have thyroid disease, anaemia, vitiligo or take medicines that affect hair, ask your doctor.

Ayurvedic view (interpretive)

Traditional practitioners advise gentle, supervised care for children, pregnant women and elders. Evidence is limited.
