How to treat or cure premature greying

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

What can be done about premature greying.

There is currently no proven way to cure premature greying that is caused by genetics. Treatment aims to find any medical cause and to manage appearance.

Step 1: see a doctor if needed

Get checked if greying is sudden, widespread, comes with other symptoms, or starts in childhood.

Step 2: tests

  • Vitamin B12, folate, ferritin and vitamin D
  • Thyroid function
  • Blood count
  • Other tests if needed

Step 3: treat any cause

If a deficiency or condition is found, treating it can stop further greying and, in some people, restore colour to some hairs.

Step 4: healthy habits

  • Stop smoking
  • Eat a balanced diet
  • Sleep well and manage stress
  • Protect hair from harsh treatments

Step 5: cosmetic options

  • Hair dye, semi-permanent colour, henna (pure) or root concealers
  • Patch test before every new product
  • Avoid products with PPD if you have had a reaction

Newer research

Scientists are studying the pigment stem cells in hair follicles, and some early studies suggest that stress hormones play a role. These are not available as treatments yet.

What to avoid

  • Costly products promising reversal
  • Unregulated herbal powders and "hair-darkening" tablets
  • Over-the-counter high-dose supplements

Ayurvedic view (interpretive)

Oiling, Amla, Brahmi and stress reduction are used traditionally, but they do not guarantee that colour returns.

Remember

Look for a medical cause first. If none is found, greying is harmless, and colouring is a safe personal choice.
