Home remedies for premature greying

Introductory summary
Hair care and lifestyle habits for early grey hair.
Home care cannot reliably restore colour to grey hair, but it can keep hair and scalp healthy and reduce factors that may speed greying.
Hair and scalp care
- Gentle scalp massage with coconut, sesame or almond oil to improve comfort and circulation. It does not reverse greying.
- Wash hair with a mild shampoo, and avoid very hot water
- Use a conditioner and avoid heavy heat styling
- Protect hair from strong sun and pollution with a scarf or hat
- Limit harsh chemical treatments and bleaching
Lifestyle
- Stop smoking and avoid second-hand smoke
- Sleep 7 to 8 hours
- Manage stress through exercise, breathing practices and hobbies
- Eat a balanced diet
If you want to cover grey hair
- Use a hair colour product from a reliable brand, and follow patch-test instructions 48 hours beforehand
- Avoid products with para-phenylenediamine (PPD) if you have had a reaction
- Natural options such as henna in its pure form can cover grey, but use only pure henna, not "black henna", which may contain PPD and can cause severe allergy
Things that do not work
- Plucking grey hair does not prevent more from growing
- Applying onion juice, curry leaf paste or similar remedies has no proven effect on colour
- Supplements are not helpful unless you are deficient
Ayurvedic view (interpretive)
Oil massage, amla and regular routines are used traditionally. Evidence is limited.
When to get help
See a doctor if you notice sudden greying or if a hair product causes itching, swelling or rash.
Remember
Healthy habits help hair, but grey hair from genes will not reverse with home remedies.
