How to treat or cure skin allergy

Most skin allergies can be controlled well, and many clear completely once the trigger is removed. Eczema and chronic hives are long-term conditions that often improve with treatment but may return, so the aim is control rather than a guaranteed cure.

Step 1: Remove the trigger Stop using or touching the suspected substance, and avoid it in future. In allergic contact dermatitis, the rash often clears in two to four weeks once the trigger is gone.

Step 2: Calm the skin Cool compresses, lukewarm baths and a plain, fragrance-free moisturiser several times a day. Avoid scratching.

Step 3: Medicines as needed

• Antihistamines for hives and itch.
• A short course of a mild to moderate steroid cream for inflamed patches, as directed by a doctor.
• Antibiotics if infection has set in.
• Oral steroids for severe, widespread reactions, in short courses.

Step 4: Specialist care For chronic hives, severe eczema or unclear triggers, a dermatologist or allergist can arrange patch or allergy tests and consider advanced treatments such as calcineurin inhibitors, biologics or phototherapy.

Step 5: Long-term control Daily moisturising, trigger avoidance, stress control and early treatment of flares keep the skin stable.

Is there a cure? Contact allergy can resolve if exposure stops. Eczema and chronic hives are controllable, and many outgrow them, though they may return.

Ayurvedic view (interpretive) Ayurvedic herbs, diet advice and cooling care may support comfort, but evidence is limited. They should be an adjunct to medical treatment.

When to get urgent help Swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, breathing difficulty, dizziness or fainting need emergency care (112). Seek help for a rash with fever, blisters or skin peeling.

Remember Treat early, avoid triggers, and see a doctor if the rash is not better in one to two weeks.
