Introductory summary
Diet for skin allergy: when food matters and how to test safely.
Diet matters for skin allergy only when a food is the trigger, as in some cases of hives, swelling or eczema. For most contact allergies, food has no role. Do not cut out whole food groups without medical advice, especially in children.
If a food is a suspected trigger
- Keep a food and symptom diary for two to four weeks.
- Common triggers include nuts, shellfish, eggs, milk, wheat, soy and some fruits. Food additives and preservatives can also cause hives in some people.
- Ask a doctor about allergy testing before removing foods long-term. Blood tests and skin prick tests are used, but a positive test alone does not prove allergy.
- If you have had swelling of the lips or throat, trouble breathing or fainting after a food, avoid it strictly and see an allergist urgently. Ask about an adrenaline auto-injector.
Foods that support healthy skin
- Colourful fruit and vegetables rich in vitamins C and E and beta carotene.
- Omega-3 foods such as fish, flaxseed and walnuts, which may support the skin barrier.
- Adequate protein, zinc and vitamin D from dal, eggs, nuts, dairy and safe sun exposure.
- Plenty of water.
- Curd or other probiotic foods, if they suit you. Evidence for allergy prevention is limited.
Things to limit
- Alcohol, very spicy food and hot drinks, which can worsen flushing and itching in some people.
- Highly processed foods with many colours and preservatives, if they trigger hives.
- Foods that you have noticed cause symptoms.
Ayurvedic view (interpretive) Ayurveda warns against incompatible food combinations (viruddha ahara), such as milk with fish or sour fruit, and advises light, bitter and astringent foods in skin disease. This is a traditional idea with limited modern evidence.
Children Do not remove milk, egg or wheat from a child's diet on your own, as it may cause nutrition gaps. Ask a paediatrician.
Remember Look for patterns, test before excluding, and treat severe reactions as emergencies (112).
