Introductory summary
How to prevent skin allergy by avoiding triggers and protecting skin.
Prevention of skin allergy means avoiding triggers, protecting the skin barrier and acting early when the skin starts to react. Most people can greatly reduce flares with a few steady habits.
Know and avoid your triggers
- If you have had a reaction, identify the substance. A dermatologist can do patch testing to find contact allergens.
- Read ingredient lists and choose fragrance-free, hypoallergenic and "free from" products when you are sensitive.
- Avoid jewellery and accessories that contain nickel, or use coated or stainless-steel alternatives.
- Patch-test new cosmetics, hair dye and skin products on a small area of skin 48 hours before full use.
Protect your skin
- Use gloves for washing, cleaning and chemicals, with cotton liners under rubber or latex gloves.
- Wash hands gently and moisturise after each wash.
- Use mild, soap-free cleansers, and avoid long, hot showers.
- Wear sunscreen and protective clothing if sun triggers a rash.
Keep the skin barrier healthy Apply moisturiser daily, even when the skin looks fine, particularly in dry weather. This lowers the risk of eczema flares.
Reduce home triggers Wash bedding weekly in hot water, reduce dust, avoid smoke and keep pets out of the bedroom if they trigger symptoms. Choose soft cotton clothing.
Food and medicines Avoid known trigger foods and medicines. Carry an allergy card and tell doctors and pharmacists about any drug allergies.
Manage stress and sleep Stress can worsen itching and flares. Relaxation, regular sleep and exercise help.
Work-related allergy Use protective equipment and wet-work precautions, and talk to an occupational doctor if the rash is linked to your job.
Ayurvedic view (interpretive) Traditional advice stresses clean habits, seasonal care and avoiding incompatible food, which fits with sensible prevention.
Remember Prevention is trigger avoidance plus daily moisturising. See a doctor for rashes that keep coming back.
