Tiredness in special cases (pregnancy, children, elderly)

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Tiredness is common in pregnancy, childhood growth and old age, but each group has specific causes to check - anemia in pregnancy, sleep and anemia in children, and hidden illness in the elderly.

Tiredness in special cases

Pregnancy: tiredness is normal in the first and third trimesters - hormones, disrupted sleep and the physical load. But do not assume it is "just pregnancy":

  • Anemia in pregnancy is common and important - it raises risks for mother and baby, so antenatal checks include hemoglobin, and prescribed iron/folate should be taken (not self-bought, not skipped).
  • Severe fatigue with headache, swelling, visual changes or reduced fetal movements needs prompt antenatal review.
  • Practical helps: daytime rest periods, early bedtime, small frequent meals, hydration, and accepting help.

Children and teenagers:

  • Common causes: too little sleep (screens late into the night), growth spurts, skipped breakfasts, exam stress, and anemia in adolescent girls.
  • Persistent tiredness with pallor, frequent infections, weight loss, or falling school performance needs a paediatrician - not vitamin tonics.
  • Protect sleep: teens need 8-10 hours; devices out of the bedroom is the single biggest win.

Elderly:

  • New tiredness in an older person deserves MORE suspicion, not less - it can be the first sign of anemia, heart failure, thyroid disease, diabetes, infection, depression or medication side effects (review the medicine list with the doctor).
  • Practical helps: regular gentle activity (it preserves energy capacity), protein-adequate meals, social engagement, and treatment of poor sleep.
  • Do not dismiss persistent fatigue as "old age" - it usually has a findable, treatable cause.

Remember: in these three groups, tiredness is common but never to be waved away - the usual tests find the usual causes.

Ayurvedic view (interpretive)

Ayurveda advises gentler regimens for these life stages - a shared caution. The specific checks above belong to medical care.
