Yoga and exercise for weight loss

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Diet loses the weight and exercise keeps it off - brisk walking, twice-weekly strength and daily steps are the proven core.

Exercise for weight loss works - but differently than most people think: diet creates the deficit, exercise protects the result. Understanding the division of labour saves years of frustration.

The honest arithmetic. A samosa takes a minute to eat and 30+ minutes of brisk walking to burn - you cannot out-walk a bad diet. Exercise's irreplaceable roles are: preserving muscle while fat drops, preventing the metabolic slowdown of dieting, improving sugar and BP independent of weight, and - above all - keeping lost weight off (regular activity is the strongest known predictor of maintenance).

The practical prescription:

  • Aerobic base: 150-300 minutes a week of brisk walking, cycling, swimming or dancing - start where you are and add gradually. Brisk = can talk, cannot sing.
  • Strength training 2-3 times a week: bodyweight work (squats, wall/knee push-ups, lunges), resistance bands or weights. Muscle is metabolically expensive tissue - preserving it is why dieters who train look and stay different.
  • Daily movement (NEAT): 7-10k steps, stairs, active chores - often matters as much as formal workouts.

Yoga's honest place. Active styles (surya namaskar flows, standing sequences) burn modest calories and build some strength; the larger contributions are stress reduction (less cortisol-driven and emotional eating), better sleep, and body awareness. Yoga complements but does not replace aerobic and strength work for fat loss - claims of dramatic yoga-only weight loss overstate the evidence.

Safety for heavier beginners: start low-impact (walking, cycling, swimming) to protect knees and back; increase weekly volume by no more than ~10%; chest pain, unusual breathlessness or dizziness warrants stopping and medical review.

Ayurvedic view (interpretive): classical advice pairs exertion with weight management within an interpretive framework of limited evidence - the modern prescription above carries the measurable effect.

Remember: diet loses the weight, exercise keeps it off. Brisk walking plus twice-weekly strength plus daily steps is the proven core; yoga adds stress and sleep support around it.
