Weight loss in special cases (pregnancy, children, elderly)
Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only
Introductory summary
Pregnancy means appropriate gain never dieting; children need household change not restriction; the elderly must protect muscle first.
Pregnancy, childhood and old age change every weight-loss rule - what is healthy for a general adult can be harmful in these groups.
Pregnancy. Pregnancy is never a time to diet for weight loss - even in women who begin pregnancy with obesity. The goal is appropriate gain (the doctor sets the target by starting BMI - less gain for higher BMI, but always some gain), built from nutritious food, not restriction. Severe dieting deprives the baby; unsupervised supplements and slimming products are outright unsafe. What is healthy: regular walking and approved activity, avoiding excess sugar and fried food, and not using 'eating for two' as a licence to double intake. Weight management resumes after delivery - breastfeeding itself helps, and crash postpartum diets harm milk supply and recovery.
Children and adolescents. Never put a child on a weight-loss diet from the internet or an adult plan. Growing bodies need full nutrition; the correct approach is family-based: healthier home food for everyone, sugary drinks out, screen time down, outdoor play up - with the paediatrician monitoring growth charts. Often the goal is holding weight steady while height catches up, not losing. Teasing, food-shaming and restrictive rules breed eating disorders; the household changes, not the child alone.
The elderly. After 65, weight loss must protect muscle and bone above all: adequate protein at every meal, resistance exercise (chair exercises, bands, light weights), and slower loss targets. Being slightly heavier is less risky in old age than being muscle-depleted (sarcopenia) - frailty and falls are the enemy, not a few kilos. Any unexplained weight loss in an elderly person is a medical symptom needing evaluation, not a success.
Ayurvedic view (interpretive): classical texts advise gentleness in these very stages - a sound instinct within an interpretive framework of limited evidence. The stage-specific rules above are the operative guidance.
Remember: pregnancy = gain appropriately, never diet; children = change the household, hold and grow, paediatrician-led; elderly = protein and strength first, slow loss, and unexplained loss is a symptom to report.
