Complications and risks of weight loss

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Obesity's complications argue for action; crash diets, bad products and eating disorders argue for pace - risks live at both extremes.

Weight problems have two directions of complications: the diseases that excess weight causes, and the harms that bad weight-loss methods cause. Both lists are worth knowing.

Complications of carrying excess weight (the reason to act):

  • Type 2 diabetes and pre-diabetes - the strongest link, especially with abdominal fat.
  • High blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol, and heart disease and stroke downstream.
  • Fatty liver disease, now extremely common and mostly silent until advanced.
  • Knee and back osteoarthritis - every extra kilo multiplies joint load.
  • Obstructive sleep apnoea (snoring with breathing pauses) - strains the heart and ruins sleep.
  • PCOS worsening and fertility problems; complications in pregnancy (diabetes, BP disorders).
  • Gallstones, reflux, certain cancers, and depression and social burden.

Complications of losing weight the wrong way (the reason to act carefully):

  • Crash diets: muscle loss (which lowers metabolism), nutritional deficiencies, hair fall, gallstones (rapid loss is a known trigger), menstrual disturbance, and rebound gain past the starting point.
  • Unverified products: liver injury from herbal slimming products, heart risks from stimulant fat-burners, electrolyte disturbance from laxative 'detoxes'.
  • Eating disorders: extreme restriction, binge cycles, purging and obsessive exercise are medical conditions - anyone whose dieting starts controlling their life, or who sees these patterns, deserves compassionate professional care, not more discipline.
  • Over-exercising injuries and under-fuelling.

The middle path that avoids both lists: moderate deficit, real food, regular activity, 0.5-1 kg a week, medical supervision when BMI is high, conditions exist, or medicines are involved.

Ayurvedic view (interpretive): classical texts warn against both excess accumulation and depleting regimens - a balanced instinct within an interpretive framework of limited evidence. The specific risks above are the operative list.

Remember: obesity's complications argue for action; bad-method complications argue for pace. Steady, supervised, sustainable - the risks live at both extremes.
