Stages of weight loss

Introductory summary
Quick water drop, slow real loss of 0.5-1 kg a week, plateaus that pass, then maintenance - the phases that keep weight off.
Weight loss done right moves through predictable phases - knowing them prevents the two classic failures: quitting early and crash-dieting into rebound.
Phase 1 - the first weeks (fast, motivating, partly illusion). Initial loss of 1-3 kg comes quickly - mostly water and gut content as carbs and salt drop, not fat. Enjoy the motivation but read it correctly: the real fat-loss rate is what comes next.
Phase 2 - steady fat loss (the real work). A sustainable deficit produces about 0.5-1 kg per week. This phase lasts months. Habits formed here - regular meals, movement routine, sleep - are what actually change the outcome. Measure weekly (same time, same scale), not daily.
Phase 3 - the plateau (normal, not failure). After some weeks, loss slows or stalls: a lighter body burns fewer calories, and the body defends its weight with increased hunger. The fixes: tighten tracking (portions creep up), increase activity or add strength training, recheck sleep and stress - and expect plateaus to break in 2-4 weeks with consistency. Plateaus are physiology, not proof the method failed.
Phase 4 - goal and transition. As you near target, shift gradually from deficit to maintenance calories. An abrupt return to old eating is how regain begins.
Phase 5 - maintenance (the phase that decides everything). Regaining is the norm without a maintenance plan: the body keeps pushing hunger up for months after loss. Successful maintainers share habits - continued regular activity (the strongest predictor), consistent meal patterns, self-weighing, and quick correction of small regains before they grow.
The crash-diet short circuit: very-low-calorie diets skip these phases - fast loss (much of it muscle and water), metabolic slowdown, gallstone risk, then rapid rebound past the starting weight. The slow phases above are not a flaw; they are the only route that holds.
Ayurvedic view (interpretive): classical regimen thinking - gradual, sustainable, routine-based - aligns with phased loss within an interpretive framework of limited evidence.
Remember: quick water drop, slow real loss, plateaus that pass, then maintenance forever. 0.5-1 kg a week is not slow - it is the speed that stays off.
