Prevention of Chikungunya

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Weekly water-container hygiene plus daytime bite protection - and net the fever patient so mosquitoes cannot spread it.

No vaccine is yet widely available for chikungunya in India - so prevention is mosquito prevention. The good news: this mosquito is a home breeder, and the household controls its own risk.

Kill the breeding (the root move)

  • Empty, scrub or cover every stagnant-water container weekly: coolers, plant-pot trays, tyres, buckets, bird baths, tanks
  • Keep water-storage containers tightly lidded; change stored water weekly
  • Clear roof and balcony puddles; unclog drains
  • One compound's negligence breeds the whole street's mosquitoes - community clean-ups during outbreaks work

Block the bite (day-biter rules)

  • This mosquito bites by DAY - peak early morning and late afternoon; night nets alone are not enough
  • Full-sleeved clothing, long pants; light colors
  • Repellent (DEET or picaridin based) on exposed skin during the day; safe per label for children above 2 months
  • Mesh on windows and doors; screens on water tanks
  • Fans on: Aedes are weak fliers and avoid moving air

Protect the patient, protect the house

In the first week of illness the patient's blood carries virus: keep them under a net and repellent - every mosquito that bites them becomes a carrier to the family. This step is the most skipped and the most valuable during outbreaks.

The travel and outbreak angle

Returning from an outbreak area with fever? Assume chikungunya or dengue possible, test early, and mosquito-protect yourself for a week - imported cases seed local outbreaks.

Who should be extra careful

Pregnant women near delivery, newborns, adults over 65, and people with diabetes, hypertension or heart disease - for them, prevention is worth double effort.

One-line summary

Weekly water-container hygiene plus daytime bite protection (sleeves, repellent, mesh, fans) - and net the fever patient so the mosquitoes in the house cannot spread it further.
