Home Remedies for Chikungunya
Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only
Introductory summary
Rest, fluids, paracetamol in week one; warmth, gentle movement, turmeric and giloy for the joints - with clear limits.
Since chikungunya has no specific drug, home care IS the main treatment for the typical case - done well, it carries the fever week and speeds the joint recovery.
During the fever week
- Rest completely: this fever punishes exertion; bed rest shortens the storm
- Fluids constantly: water, coconut water, nimbu-pani (light on sugar), rice kanji, thin soups - fever and poor intake dehydrate fast
- Paracetamol for fever and pain, dosed properly - avoid aspirin and ibuprofen until dengue is excluded
- Cool sponging for high fever; light cotton clothing
- Protect the patient from mosquitoes (net, repellent): a bitten mosquito carries the virus to the rest of the house
The joint-care kit (the long game)
- Warm compresses on stiff, aching joints once fever has settled - morning stiffness responds well to warmth
- Gentle movement: short walks and easy joint rotations from the recovery week onward - rest stiffens, gentle motion loosens; do not push into sharp pain
- Warm water soaks for hands and feet (the small joints suffer most)
- Turmeric in warm milk or food: the household anti-inflammatory - reasonable comfort support
- Giloy (guduchi) juice or tablets from a reliable brand: the traditional post-fever tonic - widely used, gentle, and popular for post-chikungunya recovery
Diet at home
Light, warm, freshly cooked food: khichdi, dal-rice, vegetable soups, idli. Appetite lags for days; small frequent meals. See the diet article for the full plate.
What home remedies cannot do
No home remedy kills the virus, shortens the acute week reliably, or prevents the chronic joint tail. Bleeding signs, breathlessness, confusion, uncontrolled fever beyond 4-5 days, or a patient who is pregnant, newborn, elderly or chronically ill: doctor territory, not home remedy territory.
One-line summary
Rest, fluids, paracetamol, mosquito protection for the patient in week one; warmth, gentle movement, turmeric and giloy for the joint tail - and clear limits where home care stops.
