Medicines and Products for Chikungunya
Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only
Introductory summary
Paracetamol first; no aspirin or NSAIDs until dengue is excluded; doctor-guided anti-inflammatories for the joint tail.
There is no antiviral for chikungunya - the medicine shelf is about symptom relief, safe pain control, and knowing which common drugs are dangerous here. Short shelf, important rules.
The safe base: paracetamol
Paracetamol for fever and pain, properly dosed, is the first-line medicine for everyone. It controls without the risks below.
The drugs to AVOID until dengue is excluded
- Aspirin: bleeding risk and, in children, Reye's syndrome
- Ibuprofen and other NSAIDs (diclofenac, naproxen): raise bleeding risk in dengue, which mimics chikungunya early
- Rule of thumb: no NSAID until a doctor has excluded dengue - after that, NSAIDs become useful for the joint inflammation
For the joint phase (doctor-guided)
- NSAIDs (once dengue is out of the picture): the workhorse for post-viral joint inflammation
- Chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine: sometimes used for stubborn chronic joint inflammation - prescription only
- Short steroid courses or DMARDs (like methotrexate): for the small group whose arthritis behaves like rheumatoid disease - rheumatologist territory
- Steroid self-medication is a real Indian hazard: never start or stop steroids from the chemist for joint pain
What has no role
- Antibiotics: chikungunya is viral; antibiotics do nothing unless a bacterial complication appears
- "Immunity boosters" and antiviral claims on supplements: marketing, not medicine
- Antiviral drugs (acyclovir etc.): ineffective here
Products that genuinely help
Paracetamol, ORS, a thermometer, mosquito repellent (DEET/picaridin) and bed nets (treatment AND household prevention), warm compresses, topical pain balms for joints, vitamin D/calcium if levels are low, and comfortable joint supports for wrists and ankles during the chronic phase.
One-line summary
Paracetamol first and always; no aspirin or NSAIDs until dengue is excluded; doctor-guided anti-inflammatories for the joint tail - and no antibiotics or booster products at any stage.
