Symptoms of Hangover
Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only
Introductory summary
Headache, thirst, nausea and fatigue, how long they last and poisoning warning signs.
Hangover symptoms usually start a few hours after drinking stops, are worst when blood alcohol reaches zero, and fade within about 24 hours.
Common symptoms
- Headache and a pounding feeling in the head
- Thirst, dry mouth and fatigue
- Nausea, stomach pain and sometimes vomiting
- Dizziness and weakness
- Poor concentration and slowed thinking
- Sensitivity to light and sound
- Muscle aches
- Low mood, anxiety or irritability, sometimes called hangxiety
- Fast heartbeat and sweating
How long it lasts
Most hangovers settle within 8 to 24 hours. Symptoms that last longer than a day or two need a closer look.
Do not confuse a hangover with alcohol poisoning
Call 112 or 102 at once if someone who has been drinking:
- Is confused, cannot be woken or is unconscious
- Vomits repeatedly or while half asleep
- Breathes slowly or irregularly, or has blue or pale skin
- Has a seizure
- Feels very cold
Never leave a person like this to sleep it off alone. Place them on their side while waiting for help.
Other warning signs
Severe abdominal pain, blood in vomit, chest pain, yellow skin or eyes, or shaking and hallucinations after stopping alcohol are not normal hangover signs and need urgent care.
Key point
A hangover is miserable but should pass. Poisoning and withdrawal are emergencies.
Before your appointment
Note how much and what you drank, over how long, and your symptoms. List any medicines or supplements taken, how often hangovers occur, and any past liver, stomach or heart problems. Be open with your doctor about alcohol use, since this helps them advise you safely.
