Introductory summary
Gentle foods and fluids, what to avoid and why detox drinks are not proven.
Food and drink cannot clear alcohol faster, but they can ease symptoms and help you recover. Keep choices simple and gentle on the stomach.
What to drink
- Water in small, steady sips
- Oral rehydration solution if you have vomited or have diarrhoea
- Coconut water, thin buttermilk or diluted fruit juice
- Weak tea, with or without a little honey (not for children under 12 months)
What to eat
- Bland starch: toast, rice, porridge or khichdi to settle the stomach and lift blood sugar
- Bananas: a source of potassium
- Eggs, curd or dal: protein and nutrients when you feel able to eat
- Soups and broths: fluid and salt together
- Fruit: a gentle source of sugar and vitamins
What to avoid
- More alcohol
- Very oily, fried or spicy food, which may worsen acidity
- Large amounts of coffee or energy drinks
- Fizzy drinks if they trigger nausea
Before drinking
Eating a proper meal before drinking slows alcohol absorption. Alternate alcohol with water.
Ayurvedic suggestion
Ayurveda recommends light, cool, easily digested food after heavy drinking. This is a traditional idea and not a proven hangover treatment.
Key point
Be wary of "detox" drinks and liver-cleanse plans. No food or drink is proven to flush alcohol out of the body.
Before your appointment
Note how much and what you drank, over how long, and your symptoms. List any medicines or supplements taken, how often hangovers occur, and any past liver, stomach or heart problems. Be open with your doctor about alcohol use, since this helps them advise you safely.
