Types of Hangover

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Hangover types by main symptom and drinking pattern, versus poisoning and withdrawal.

There is no official classification of hangovers, but they can be described by the main symptoms and by the drinking pattern behind them.

By main symptoms

  • Headache-dominant: pounding head, thirst and sensitivity to light.
  • Stomach-dominant: nausea, acidity, belly pain and vomiting.
  • Fatigue-dominant: heavy tiredness, poor focus and aching muscles.
  • Mood-dominant: anxiety, low mood and irritability that can last into the next day.

By pattern of drinking

  • After a single heavy night: the usual hangover, which settles within a day.
  • After repeated binge drinking: symptoms may be stronger and recovery slower, and stomach and liver stress add up.
  • After drinking dark or cheap spirits: more congeners may mean a rougher hangover.

Hangover versus related conditions

  • Alcohol poisoning is an emergency with confusion, slow breathing or unconsciousness.
  • Alcohol withdrawal can follow stopping after heavy daily drinking and brings tremor, sweating, agitation and seizures. It needs medical care.
  • Gastritis, pancreatitis and ulcers can cause severe stomach pain after alcohol and need a doctor.

Ayurvedic view

Ayurveda describes degrees of intoxication (madatyaya) and associates symptoms with pitta, vata or kapha. This is a traditional framework, not a medical classification.

Key point

If hangovers are frequent or you drink to relieve them, this is a sign to talk to a doctor.

Before your appointment

Note how much and what you drank, over how long, and your symptoms. List any medicines or supplements taken, how often hangovers occur, and any past liver, stomach or heart problems. Be open with your doctor about alcohol use, since this helps them advise you safely.
