Stages of Hangover

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

The usual hangover timeline from drinking to recovery and when to seek care.

A hangover follows a fairly predictable course. The stages below describe the typical timeline, though the pattern varies between people.

Stage 1: During drinking

Alcohol dehydrates the body, lowers blood sugar and disturbs sleep. Symptoms are not yet felt because alcohol dulls them.

Stage 2: Waking after drinking

Blood alcohol falls toward zero. Headache, thirst, nausea and fatigue appear. Sleep has been poor and light and noise feel harsh.

Stage 3: Peak (often late morning to early afternoon)

Symptoms are at their worst when alcohol is fully cleared. Concentration, balance and reaction time are still impaired, so driving and operating machinery are unsafe even though you may feel sober.

Stage 4: Recovery

As fluid, salts and sugar recover and inflammation settles, symptoms fade. Appetite returns. Most people feel normal within 24 hours.

Stage 5: After effects

Low mood, tiredness and poor focus may linger into the next day, especially after heavy drinking.

When the usual course is not followed

Symptoms that get worse, last beyond 24 to 48 hours, or come with severe pain, yellow skin, blood in vomit, confusion or seizures need urgent medical advice. Call 112 or 102 for an emergency.

Key point

Only time clears alcohol. Fluids, food and rest ease symptoms while the body recovers.

Before your appointment

Note how much and what you drank, over how long, and your symptoms. List any medicines or supplements taken, how often hangovers occur, and any past liver, stomach or heart problems. Be open with your doctor about alcohol use, since this helps them advise you safely.
