Medicines and Products for Hangover

Introductory summary

Why paracetamol and NSAIDs need care with alcohol, rehydration salts, unproven products.

No medicine cures a hangover. Some can ease individual symptoms, but several carry real risks when mixed with alcohol, so caution is needed.

For headache and aches

  • Paracetamol (acetaminophen): avoid taking it while alcohol is still in the body or after heavy drinking. Alcohol and paracetamol together increase the risk of liver damage.
  • NSAIDs such as ibuprofen: may ease headache but can irritate the stomach and cause bleeding, especially on an empty stomach or with gastritis, ulcers or kidney disease. Take only with food and in the recommended dose, or avoid them if unsure.

For nausea and acidity

  • Antacids may ease acidity.
  • Anti-nausea medicines should be used only as advised by a doctor or pharmacist.

For rehydration

Oral rehydration salts replace fluid and electrolytes. They are the safest option for dehydration.

Products sold for hangovers

Many supplements, patches, "liver detox" tablets and herbal powders promise quick relief. Evidence is weak or missing. Some products contain high doses of vitamins or herbs that can harm the liver or interact with medicines.

Do not

  • Mix alcohol with sedatives, sleeping pills, opioids or antihistamines. This can slow breathing dangerously.
  • Take extra doses of painkillers to speed recovery.

When to see a doctor

Seek help for severe pain, repeated vomiting, yellow skin, confusion, or if you rely on medicines or alcohol to function.

Key point

Rest, fluids and food are the safest treatment. Check with a pharmacist before taking any tablet after drinking.

Before your appointment

Note how much and what you drank, over how long, and your symptoms. List any medicines or supplements taken, how often hangovers occur, and any past liver, stomach or heart problems. Be open with your doctor about alcohol use, since this helps them advise you safely.
