Complications and Risks of Hangover

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Poisoning, accidents, stomach and liver harm from heavy drinking and when to get help.

Most hangovers pass without harm, but the drinking behind them can cause serious problems.

Short-term risks

  • Alcohol poisoning: confusion, vomiting, slow breathing, unconsciousness or seizures. Call 112 or 102 immediately.
  • Accidents and injuries: impaired judgement and coordination raise the risk of falls, crashes and violence, and these effects can last into the next day.
  • Drunk driving: you may still be over the legal limit the morning after.
  • Dehydration: severe cases may need fluids in hospital.
  • Stomach bleeding and gastritis: repeated heavy drinking can irritate and damage the stomach lining.
  • Low blood sugar, particularly in people with diabetes.
  • Drug interactions: painkillers, sedatives and other medicines can be dangerous with alcohol.

Risks of repeated heavy drinking

  • Fatty liver, alcoholic hepatitis and cirrhosis
  • Pancreatitis
  • High blood pressure and heart rhythm problems
  • Some cancers
  • Depression, anxiety and sleep problems
  • Alcohol use disorder and withdrawal, which can cause seizures

Warning signs

Yellow skin or eyes, black or bloody vomit, severe belly pain, shaking, hallucinations or confusion need urgent care.

Getting help

Frequent hangovers, drinking to cope, or failed attempts to cut down are reasons to speak to a doctor or counsellor. Do not stop suddenly after heavy daily drinking without medical advice.

Key point

A hangover is a warning from the body. Repeated episodes deserve attention.

Before your appointment

Note how much and what you drank, over how long, and your symptoms. List any medicines or supplements taken, how often hangovers occur, and any past liver, stomach or heart problems. Be open with your doctor about alcohol use, since this helps them advise you safely.
