Ayurvedic Treatment for Heat Rash
Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only
Introductory summary
Ayurvedic cooling routines and foods, with limited evidence and safety points.
Ayurveda describes hot-weather skin eruptions as linked to aggravated pitta and heat in the blood (rakta) and sweat (sveda). Ayurvedic care for heat rash focuses on cooling and gentle routines. This is a traditional framework. Scientific evidence for Ayurvedic treatments of heat rash is limited, and the rash usually settles on its own once the skin is cooled.
What practitioners commonly suggest
- Cooling lifestyle: staying in shade, wearing light cotton, taking cool baths and avoiding strenuous activity in heat.
- Cooling foods and drinks: plain water, coconut water, buttermilk and seasonal fruit such as cucumber and watermelon, while avoiding very spicy, oily or fried food.
- External care: some practitioners use sandalwood (chandan) paste or rose water on the skin for its cooling feel. These may soothe but are not proven treatments.
- Herbs: neem, sandalwood and others are traditionally used. Evidence is limited, and some people develop allergic skin reactions.
Safety points
- Do a patch test before putting any paste, oil or herbal product on the skin.
- Do not apply thick pastes or oils to rashy skin, as they may trap sweat and worsen the rash.
- Do not use herbal products or home oils on babies without a paediatrician's advice.
- Stop anything that causes burning, redness or more itching.
- See a doctor for fever, pus, spreading redness or a rash that lasts more than a week.
Key point
Cooling the skin and body is the main step. Ayurvedic measures can be gentle adjuncts but should not replace medical advice for infection or heat illness.
Before your appointment
Note when the rash began, where it is and what makes it better or worse, such as heat, clothes, creams or sweating. List any products, medicines, oils or herbal pastes you have used, and whether anyone at home has a similar rash. For a baby, note fever, feeding, and what the baby wears and sleeps in. Take photos of the rash over a few days.
