Ayurvedic Treatment for Nausea

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Ayurvedic view of nausea as Hrillasa: ginger, fennel and mint as comfort measures, limited evidence and cautions.

Nausea is a symptom with many causes. Some are harmless and some need urgent care. Ayurveda describes nausea as Hrillasa and vomiting as Chhardi, linked to Pitta, Kapha and weak digestion. This is a traditional framework. Evidence for most Ayurvedic remedies is limited.

Traditional comfort measures

  • Ginger (Shunthi): the best studied. Small studies suggest ginger may ease nausea in pregnancy and after surgery or chemotherapy, though results vary.
  • Cardamom (Elaichi): chewed or taken as a light tea for freshness
  • Fennel (Saunf): chewed in small amounts or taken as a mild tea
  • Mint (Pudina): a light infusion or smelling fresh leaves
  • Coriander seed water and lemon water: traditional cooling drinks
  • Puffed rice (Laja) water: a traditional light drink during recovery

Lifestyle

  • Light, warm, easily digested meals
  • Avoid oily, heavy and very spicy food
  • Rest and calm surroundings
  • Fresh air

Safety

  • See a doctor for nausea lasting more than 2 days, with severe pain, blood or dehydration
  • Ginger in large doses may cause heartburn and may affect blood thinners. Ask your doctor in pregnancy or with medicines.
  • Do not give herbs, honey or ginger preparations to infants. No honey under 12 months.
  • Children should take only food-level amounts of such remedies, as a paediatrician advises
  • Avoid unknown herbal mixtures and any remedy with added metals

Key point

Ayurvedic ideas offer gentle comfort. They do not replace finding and treating the cause.

Remember

Most nausea passes with rest and fluids. See a doctor if it lasts more than 2 days, keeps returning or comes with warning signs.
