Ayurvedic treatment for obesity

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Ayurvedic view of obesity (Sthaulya), traditional ideas and safety cautions.

Ayurveda describes excess weight as Sthaulya, linked to increased Kapha and Meda dhatu, weak digestive fire (Agni) and a lifestyle of low activity and heavy food. This is an interpretive framework. Evidence for Ayurvedic treatments for obesity is limited, and no herb or therapy has been shown to melt fat safely.

Traditional ideas

  • Lifestyle: early rising, regular exercise (Vyayama), avoiding day sleep, lighter and warm meals, regular meal times
  • Diet: less sweet, oily, cold and heavy food, and more barley, millets, pulses, vegetables and spices such as ginger and cumin in cooking
  • Therapies: Udvartana (dry powder massage) and Panchakarma are done only in a clinic by trained therapists
  • Herbs often mentioned: Triphala, Guggulu and honey-water. Evidence is limited.

Safety

  • Do not use "fat burner" or "slimming" herbal products of unknown content. Some contain stimulants or hidden drugs.
  • Guggulu and other herbs can interact with medicines for thyroid, diabetes and cholesterol
  • Do not take herbs if you are pregnant or breastfeeding unless a doctor advises
  • Do not give herbs, weight-loss teas or fasting plans to children or teens
  • Do not stop prescribed medicines
  • No honey for infants under 12 months

Remember

Ayurvedic lifestyle ideas, such as regular meals, early sleep and daily movement, align with standard advice. Use them alongside medical care, not instead of it.

When to get help

See a doctor if you are gaining weight steadily, have a large waist or have symptoms such as breathlessness, snoring, joint pain or excessive thirst. Avoid crash diets, slimming teas and fat-burner products, and do not give herbs, supplements or weight-loss plans to children or teens without a paediatrician's advice. In an emergency call 112 or 102.
