Introductory summary
How PCOS is managed with lifestyle, medicines and fertility care. Manageable, not curable.
PCOS is a long-term condition. It cannot be permanently cured, but symptoms can be controlled and many women do very well. Treatment is based on your goals.
First line for most women: lifestyle
- Regular exercise and a balanced diet
- Weight loss of 5 to 10 percent when there is overweight, which often brings back regular periods and ovulation
- Good sleep and stress care
For regular periods and womb protection
Combined contraceptive pills or progestin courses, as advised by your doctor.
For hair and skin
Anti-androgen medicines with contraception, topical acne treatment, laser or other hair removal methods. Results take 6 months or more.
For insulin resistance
Metformin in selected women, and other options for weight management.
For fertility
- Letrozole as the usual first medicine
- Clomiphene or injections if needed
- IVF in some cases
- Pre-pregnancy health check, folic acid and blood sugar control
During pregnancy
Closer monitoring for diabetes and blood pressure.
Mental health and support
Counselling, support groups and treatment of depression and anxiety are part of care.
Ayurvedic support
Ayurvedic lifestyle advice, diet and Yoga may help well-being. Evidence is limited. Tell your doctor about herbs, especially if you are trying to conceive.
What to avoid
Hormone products without a prescription, strict crash diets and "PCOS cure" claims.
See a doctor if your periods are absent for 3 months, or you have heavy bleeding or difficulty conceiving.
Remember
PCOS is manageable. A plan tailored to you can restore cycles, improve skin and protect long-term health.
