Diet and food guidance for PCOS

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Diet for PCOS: low glycaemic foods, protein, fibre and supplement cautions.

No diet cures PCOS, but food choices can improve insulin resistance, weight, periods and energy. No single diet is best, and the plan should be one you can follow long term.

Helpful approaches

  • Low glycaemic index (GI) foods: whole grains, millets such as ragi and jowar, oats, brown rice in moderate portions, pulses and dals
  • Protein with every meal: dal, paneer, eggs, fish, chicken, tofu, sprouts
  • Fibre: vegetables, salad, fruit with skin and seeds
  • Healthy fats: nuts, seeds, mustard or olive oil, and fish if you eat it
  • Regular meal times, and do not skip breakfast
  • Portion control and mindful eating

Limit

  • Sugary drinks, sweets, bakery items and refined flour (maida)
  • Deep-fried and ultra-processed snacks
  • Large amounts of white rice and potato at one meal
  • Late-night eating

Nutrients to check

Vitamin D and B12 are often low. Inositol (myo-inositol) and vitamin D supplements are used by some women. Evidence is mixed, and you should discuss them with your doctor.

Ayurvedic view

Traditional advice favours warm, light food that reduces Kapha, such as barley, millets, pulses, bitter and astringent vegetables and spices like ginger and cinnamon. It limits sweet, heavy, oily and cold food and daytime sleeping. This is a traditional framework.

Be careful with

Extreme low-carb, keto or fasting plans, and herbal powders that are not regulated. If you have a history of eating disorders, talk to your doctor first.

See a doctor if you are losing or gaining weight quickly, or have symptoms of high blood sugar.

Remember

Balanced, high-fibre meals with enough protein help most. Aim for steady habits, not strict rules.
