Ayurvedic treatment for PCOS

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Ayurvedic view of PCOS, traditional diet, therapies and herbs, and what evidence supports.

In Ayurveda, irregular periods with ovarian cysts are discussed under Artava-kshaya, Nashtartava and Granthi, linked with Kapha and Vata imbalance and excess Medo dhatu. This page describes the traditional approach. It is an interpretive framework, evidence from good trials is limited, and it should be used as an adjunct to, not a substitute for, medical care.

Traditional understanding

Heavy, sweet, oily and cold food, daytime sleep, little exercise, stress and irregular routine are said to increase Kapha and block the channels (Srotas) that carry menstrual blood, causing delayed periods, weight gain and cysts.

Approaches mentioned in texts

  • Diet and routine: light, warm, freshly cooked food, less sugar and dairy excess, regular exercise and regular sleep
  • Panchakarma therapies: such as Udvartana (dry powder massage) and Virechana, only under a qualified practitioner
  • Herbs often mentioned: Shatavari, Ashoka, Lodhra, Kanchanar guggulu, Guduchi, Triphala, cinnamon and fenugreek
  • Lifestyle: Yoga, Pranayama and stress care

What research says

Small studies suggest that some formulations, cinnamon, fenugreek, spearmint tea and Ayurvedic programmes may help certain symptoms. Study sizes are small, and results are not firm enough to replace standard treatment.

Safety

  • Some herbs act on hormones or blood sugar and can interact with metformin, contraceptives or fertility medicines
  • Avoid unregulated products, and tell your doctor about everything you take
  • Stop herbs and speak with a doctor if you are trying to conceive or are pregnant
  • Do not stop prescribed medicines

See a doctor if your periods stop for 3 months, or symptoms worsen.

Remember

Ayurvedic lifestyle care may support weight and routine. Hormone and sugar checks still need a doctor.
