How to treat or cure psoriasis

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

How psoriasis is controlled with creams, light therapy and biologics.

Psoriasis cannot be cured at present, but it can be controlled very well. Treatment depends on how severe it is and where it is.

Step 1: see a dermatologist

A skin specialist confirms the diagnosis and checks the joints, nails and general health.

Step 2: skin care for everyone

  • Moisturise at least once or twice daily, especially after bathing
  • Use lukewarm water and mild soap-free cleansers
  • Avoid scratching and picking, which can trigger new patches
  • Protect skin from injury and sunburn, but short sensible sun exposure can help

Step 3: creams and ointments (mild to moderate disease)

  • Topical steroids, used as directed and for limited periods
  • Vitamin D analogues such as calcipotriol
  • Coal tar, salicylic acid and calcineurin inhibitors for some sites

Step 4: light therapy

Narrowband UVB phototherapy, in a clinic, helps many people with widespread disease.

Step 5: tablets and injections (moderate to severe disease)

  • Methotrexate, ciclosporin, acitretin or apremilast
  • Biologic medicines that target specific immune signals, for severe disease or psoriatic arthritis

These need blood tests and regular monitoring.

Step 6: treat triggers and related conditions

Stop smoking, reduce alcohol, manage weight, stress, mood and cholesterol or diabetes.

What to avoid

  • Unregulated steroid creams and tablets, or tablets with hidden steroids
  • Stopping prescribed treatment suddenly
  • "Guaranteed cure" claims

Ayurvedic view (interpretive)

Herbal oils and lifestyle advice may be used as adjuncts. They do not replace medical treatment.

Remember

Psoriasis is controllable. Work with your dermatologist and keep up regular follow-up.
