Ayurvedic treatment for psoriasis

Reviewed by medical experts · For informational purposes only

Introductory summary

Ayurvedic view of psoriasis and safety cautions.

Ayurveda compares psoriasis with chronic skin conditions grouped under Kushta, especially Ekakushta and Kitibha. It links them to imbalance of Vata and Kapha with Pitta and Rakta involvement, together with weak digestion and toxins (Ama). This is a traditional framework. Scientific evidence that Ayurvedic treatments control psoriasis is limited, and quality of studies is low.

Medical care comes first

Psoriasis is a long-term immune condition that can affect joints and general health. A dermatologist's care should not be replaced by herbal treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines.

Traditional approaches sometimes used

  • Oil application: coconut, neem or herbal oils for dry skin. Moisturising helps psoriasis, and most plain oils are acceptable if they do not irritate.
  • Herbs used traditionally: neem, turmeric (Haridra), Manjishtha, Guduchi and Khadira. Small studies exist, but evidence is weak.
  • Panchakarma procedures: such as Virechana, Vamana or Takradhara, carried out only under supervision. Not suitable for everyone, and results are not proven.
  • Diet and routine advice: light, freshly cooked food and avoiding incompatible combinations

Cautions

  • Some herbo-mineral Ayurvedic products contain heavy metals such as mercury, lead or arsenic. Use only products from reliable makers with testing.
  • Some products labelled "herbal" contain hidden steroids. Stopping them suddenly can cause a severe flare.
  • Do not apply caustic or unknown pastes to the skin
  • Avoid self-treatment in pregnancy and for children
  • Do not stop prescribed medicines without telling your doctor

When to get help

See a dermatologist for widespread patches, joint pain or any sign of infection.

Remember

Ayurveda is an interpretive, adjunct approach with limited evidence. It does not replace dermatology care.
